THE SCOTCH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN TOBAGO

In 1807, a plantation owner asked the nonconformist London Missionary Society (LMS), mainly Congregationalists and

Presbyterians (aka Church of Scotland), to send a missionary for the enslaved people in Tobago. The congregations of

this Presbyterian mission consisted mainly therefore of the enslaved people.

The LMS built kirks in Scarborough in 1813, in Goldsborough and Plymouth, and Presbyterian clergymen also preached

at Betsy’s Hope.

In 1834, the Scotch Presbyterian Church made provision for a minister in Tobago, the majority of the 'white' population

being of Scottish origin.

in 1835 Presbyterian churches were being built and schools erected and opened and in 1837 the Court House in

Scarborough was made available for the use of the Presbyterians' Sunday worship, while their church was being built.

The minister was paid from the Island Treasury.

However, in 1841, the Committee of the Presbyterian Association decided to dissolve their congregation, and it was agreed

that the kirks of Scarborough and St. Paul's should be leased to the Established Church for ecclesiastical purposes, until

such time they might once more be required by the Presbyterians.

The Scotch Presbyterian Church continued its decline in Tobago and by 1871, the Presbyterian Church, unlike the Anglican

Church, United Brethren (Moravians) and Wesleyans (Methodists) now received no annual grant from the Treasury, its

"interests being entirely cancelled" (The Tobago Gazette 11 August 1871).

In the same year, there were only 37 members of the Church of Scotland in Tobago (The Tobago Gazette 22 July 1871.

Consequently, the kirk at St. Paul's became a Church of England parish church and that of Scarborough a parish

schoolhouse.
